12 Christmas gifts for 4 year olds in their first year at school, sorted for after school, weekend mornings and bedtime, plus a safety check to do first.

The best Christmas gifts for 4 year olds starting school fit the three parts of their new day: something to burn off energy or settle with after school, something big and active for weekend mornings, and something quiet for bedtime. A den kit, a balance bike, bean bags, picture books and a kids' yoga mat all earn their place.

Reception is the first year of primary school in England, and gov.uk says most children start Reception full-time in the September after their fourth birthday. A four-year-old can come out of the school gate tired and fizzing at the same time, so the 12 Christmas presents for 4 year olds below are sorted by time of day, and none needs a screen. For brothers and sisters of other ages, our screen-free Christmas gifts guide covers ages 3 to 8.

How do you choose the best presents for 4 year olds in Reception?

Choose for the time of day the present will be used, not the age on the box: something active for after school, something big for the weekend and something quiet for the hour before bed. One present for each slot covers the whole day.

The NHS says children aged 3 to 4 should spend at least 180 minutes a day in a variety of physical activities, spread throughout the day and including outdoor play, and the UK Chief Medical Officers' guidelines agree. The Department for Education's Development Matters guidance for England adds what 3 and 4 year olds are learning: to skip, hop and hold a pose, ride scooters and bikes, build ball skills and use scissors. That's the shopping list behind these ideas.

What are good after-school gifts for a tired four-year-old?

The best after-school presents let a four-year-old choose between letting off steam and switching off, without a screen: a den for lying low, stepping stones for running it off, a yoga mat for a bit of both and modelling dough for busy hands.

Development Matters suggests Reception children get "time to be still and quiet", such as lying in a den, and chances to get out of breath several times every day.

1. A den kit or pop-up play tent

A den is a small, enclosed space a child can crawl into and call their own. Clip a sheet over two chairs, or pop the tent up in a corner.

Good for: quiet time and imagination. Indoors.

2. Balance stepping stones

Plastic stepping stones make an instant "the floor is lava" course. Spread them out, then wider, then add a cushion to jump from at the end.

Good for: balance and burning off energy. Indoors.

3. A yoga mat with numbered poses (ours)

Holding a pose for musical statues is on the Development Matters list, and this entry is ours: a full-length mat with fifteen standing poses marked in, numbered so a four-year-old can work through them while you call them out. Our guide on how to start yoga with your child assumes no experience.

Good for: balancing, stretching and following a sequence. Indoors.

4. Modelling dough and child-safe scissors

Development Matters gives "making snips in paper with scissors" as a skill 3 and 4 year olds are learning. Dough, cutters and rounded scissors make a quiet, busy half hour at the kitchen table.

Good for: small hand movements and using tools. Indoors.

What are the best weekend-morning gifts for a four-year-old?

Weekend mornings are when you have the most time, so this is the slot for big, active, outdoor presents: a balance bike or scooter, bean bags, pavement chalk, or wellies and a puddle suit.

5. A balance bike or scooter, with a helmet

Development Matters names balance bikes as a good option for Reception children, and the NHS lists scooting and riding a bike among its ideas for under-5s. Wrap the helmet with it.

Good for: balance and leg strength. Outdoors.

6. Bean bags and a target

Bean bags don't bounce or roll away like a ball, so a missed catch lands where it fell. Add a washing basket as a target.

Good for: ball skills and aiming. Garden, park or a long hallway.

7. Chunky pavement chalk

A tub of thick chalk turns a patio or a fence into a giant drawing board. Add a hopscotch grid for hopping and counting.

Good for: big arm movements and hopping. Outdoors, on dry days.

8. Wellies, a puddle suit and a bug pot

Waterproofs aren't exciting to unwrap, but they make a wet Saturday possible. Add a magnifying bug pot and the walk to the park becomes a snail hunt.

Good for: getting outside in any weather. Outdoors.

What are good bedtime gifts for a four-year-old?

Bedtime presents should be quiet, short and screen-free. UK government guidance from March 2026 suggests children aged 2 to 5 avoid screens in the hour before bed. Picture books, a floor jigsaw, a lacing set and a soft toy for slow breathing are four calm ways to fill that hour.

9. Picture books, a few at a time

A book is the easiest present to get right. Give three or four picture books rather than one, so there's a choice each night.

Good for: a shared bedtime story. In bed.

10. A floor jigsaw with big pieces

A floor jigsaw is a large puzzle with chunky pieces that a child builds on the carpet. Development Matters names puzzles as play that builds children's control and confidence with their hands.

Good for: patience and hand control. Indoors.

11. A lacing or threading set

A lacing set is a pack of chunky shapes with holes and thick laces to thread through them. Development Matters suggests threading for Reception children's small motor skills, and it's slow, absorbing work before bath time.

Good for: careful hand movements. Indoors.

12. A soft toy breathing buddy

A breathing buddy is a soft toy your child lies down with on their tummy. Ask them to breathe in slowly and watch the toy rise, then breathe out and watch it sink. Our bedtime yoga for kids routine has more to try.

Good for: a slow, quiet end to the day. In bed.

What do 4 year olds like right now?

Four-year-olds like running, hiding, building, being read to and joining in with the grown-ups, and that doesn't change with the toy charts. Match the present to whichever your child does most.

  • Comes home wound up: stepping stones or a yoga mat.
  • Comes home quiet: a den kit, modelling dough or a floor jigsaw.
  • Never stops moving: a balance bike, bean bags or pavement chalk.
  • Wants you to play too: bean bags, or a yoga mat long enough for both of you.

What do you buy a four-year-old who has everything?

An experience, or something that gets used up. A swimming session, a day out with a grandparent or a trip to the woods takes up no space, and modelling dough or pavement chalk doesn't add to a full cupboard once it's finished. Write the experience on a card so there's still something to unwrap.

Which Christmas gifts for 4 year olds go well together?

Pair one present from each part of the day, so they don't compete for attention. An illustrative school night in January: stepping stones while tea cooks, the den and a picture book, then screens off, three poses on the mat and the breathing buddy in bed.

Buying for a brother or sister too? Our gifts for 5 year olds are sorted by skill, and our Christmas gifts for 3 year olds by what they're learning at nursery.

What if your four-year-old isn't interested?

Some four-year-olds ignore a present for weeks, then adopt it, so join in the first few times and keep it in sight rather than in a cupboard. Give each present a first go on Christmas afternoon and a second on Boxing Day, and save one for the first wet Saturday in January, when the novelty of everything else has worn off. Our things to do with a 4 year old need nothing new at all.

If it's a screen they really want, the Best Start in Life guidance suggests one hour a day for 2 to 5 year olds, less if possible: balance, not a ban.

How do you check a toy is safe before you wrap it?

Buy from a seller you trust, follow the age label, and check for small parts, loose ribbons, magnets and button batteries. That's the Office for Product Safety and Standards' advice in Buy toys safely this Christmas. Two checks matter most:

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Christmas present for a 4-year-old girl?

The same as for a four-year-old boy. Nothing on this list is gendered. Choose by what the child enjoys doing, whether that's running, building, hiding in a den or hearing a story, and by when in the day they'll use it.

What toys are trending for 4 year olds?

We don't track the toy charts, which change by the week. This list is sorted by when a four-year-old will use each present instead, because after school, weekends and bedtime don't go out of fashion by February.

What are good small Xmas gifts for 4 year olds?

The smaller ideas on this list fit a stocking: bean bags, a tub of pavement chalk, modelling dough with cutters, a lacing set or a picture book. Each one gets used on the day, and none of them needs batteries or a screen.

Is a yoga mat a good Christmas present for a 4 year old?

It is for a four-year-old who likes copying you. A Yogi-Me mat is designed for ages 3 to 8, and the poses are numbered, so there's nothing to set up and no screen. It's full length so you can join in, and at 800 g it rolls up on a shoulder strap they can carry themselves.

A mat they can carry to Grandma's

If a yoga mat is on your list, ours has 15 numbered poses laser-engraved into the surface for a four-year-old to follow in order. Choose Sun Salutation, the standing poses, for a child who comes home wound up, or Freedom Flow, the floor poses, for one who comes home quiet. Same size and price, seven colours each.

Buying as a grandparent? It's 183 x 61 cm, the length of an adult mat, so you can try the tree pose from Sun Salutation alongside them, and there's still room to stretch out at eight. It's 6 mm thick and made from what our supplier specifies as non-toxic, PVC-free TPE. It weighs 800 g and rolls up with a carry strap. After a sticky Christmas tea, wipe it with a damp cloth and a little mild soap and let it dry flat.

Buying for a brother, sister or cousin as well? Two or more mats are 10 per cent off. Becks, a yoga teacher and verified buyer, wrote in her review: "I just made the mistake of buying one, instead of two."

Mats are £34.99 with free UK delivery and 30-day returns. Pick a colour for under the tree from our kids' yoga mats.
